haiku

Lord I surrender
empty.. i obey... it hurts
but there's a peace there.

I am ready for the Storm (lyrics and song by Dougie MacLean, recorded and performed in below video by the late Christian artist, Rich Mullins, 1955-1997)

The waves crash in the tide rolls out
It's an angry sea but there is no doubt
That the lighthouse will keep shining out
To warn a lonely sailor
And the lightning strikes
And the wind cuts cold
Through the sailor's bones
Through the sailor's soul
'Til there's nothing left that he can hold
Except a rolling ocean
Oh I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
I'm ready for the storm
Oh give me mercy for my dreams
'Cause every confrontation seems to tell me
What it really means
To be this lonely sailor
And when the sky begins to clear
The sun it melts away my fear
And I shed a silent weary tear
For those who mean to love me
Oh I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
I'm ready for the storm
The distance it is no real friend
And time will take its time
And you will find that in the end
It brings you me
This lonely sailor
And when You take me by the hand
And You love me, Lord, You love me
And I should have realized
I had no reasons to be frightened
Oh I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
I'm ready for the storm

Jesus in the bowling alley

"Give thanks to the Lord by sharing your faith, which is the reason for the hope you have."   - Kristin Armstrong.

I had one of the most unusual conversations the other night at a bowling alley.  A group of us from work had decided to get together, for the first time on a social basis, to go bowling.  I chose not to bowl, as that's just not my thing, and so did this friend of mine, so she & I just hung out and watched and talked. a lot.  too much, perhaps.  see, she & I have sort of a weird relationship.   she's young enough to be my daughter.  her lifestyle and mine are at such polar opposites, it's crazy.  and yet she is the one person at work whom i have opened up to about some things,  and tonight i became the one person at work that she, too, has completely confided in about a recent development in her life.  not that it would surprise anyone, the things she shared, as she is an extremely candid person, too candid, boundary-less when it comes to sharing personal and inappropriate information.  or maybe it just seems that way because her whole life seems so shockingly inappropriate. whatever the case, it was still sweet to be greeted at the dimly lit bowling alley with a great big hug when i arrived, like she was waiting and hoping that i would come. (she'd texted me to make sure i was coming, otherwise she wouldn't be there...)  Before I go on, let me mention that this friend has a condition called Asperger syndrome, which explains why she has such difficulty in social situations such as this, why our other co-workers avoid talking to her and why she feels hurt by this and gravitates towards quiet little me, an easy sounding board.  Here's a little explanation of Asperger syndrome I found on betterhealth.vic.gov.au:

A person with Asperger syndrome may have trouble understanding the emotions of other people, and the subtle messages sent by facial expression, eye contact and body language are often missed or misinterpreted. Because of this, people with Asperger syndrome might be mistakenly perceived as being egotistical, selfish or uncaring.

These are unfair labels because the person concerned is neurologically unable to understand other people’s emotional states. People with Asperger syndrome are usually shocked, upset and remorseful when told their actions were hurtful or inappropriate.

People with Asperger syndrome can sometimes appear to have an ‘inappropriate’, ‘immature’ or ‘delayed’ understanding of sexual codes of conduct. This can sometimes result in sexually inappropriate behaviour. For example, a 20-year-old with Asperger syndrome may display behaviours which befit a teenager.

This easily explains how she creates a very weird atmosphere in our workplace quite often, like constantly. Hilarious, though, she's very funny, but things can get awkward quickly, and the frequent references to sexual topics, not only are they inappropriate in the work environment, but clearly out-of-place in any social context.    And tonight she is in her element.  Without the written and unwritten codes of conduct of the work environment, here she is free to talk as inappropriately as she wants, and sharing all her dirty laundry with me is exactly what she does.  She and I are standing between our group's lane and the lane of the people bowling next to us.  She moves around a lot while she talks, makes suggestive (embarrassing) gestures often, and twice we are told to get out of the way of these other people's lane. (a bowling alley staff person has even been summoned to order us out of the way at one point!)  I was relieved to get her in a chair and out of view, especially after begging her NOT to demonstrate her twerking ability as she so loves to do. (and I was the one drinking a beer, she was totally sober!!  oops, my bad...I know, I'm a stumbling block for new believers, but every now & then I just love a nice cold Bud Light Lime...)    So the rest of our group is bowling and drinking and seemingly unaware of our rather odd conversations.  Or so i thought.  Turns out, as I found out the next day at work, they were actually picking up quite a bit of what we were saying (how could they not?) and were laughing their heads off at her behind her back.  They later high-fived me and said how amazed they were that I was able to sit and listen to her go on and on, yet with a straight face through it all.  hmmm. don't know if I should take that as a compliment or not.  Honestly, I was so shocked at times that I simply had no words to say, and the things she told me just made me sad, not want to laugh.

Let me give you a little background info on her, and you'll understand why..  just a few tasty morsels that she confided in me, that could be used as juicy gossip if landing on the wrong ears: (I don't think anyone there knows about my blog, it's a private thing..)  So here goes, a few of the many interesting titles or achievements that she can add to her resume:
    - graduated high school at age 16 while in a rehab center.
    - kicked out of 3  colleges
    - went to detox for heroin addiction
     -was a hooker,
     -a stripper,
     - a web cam & phone sex operator,
     - knows where all the local strip clubs, "sleeze houses" and places to buy drugs are,
     - and is frequently involved in many more despicable activities i don't even want to mention here.
      - a current member of Alcoholics Anomynous (ok, at least that's a good thing..)

So why-oh-why do I tolerate her behavior and her constant stream of inappropriate discussions?  Where in the world are my boundaries? I know, I'm a terrible wimp when it comes to setting boundaries with other people.  Common sense would tell me that she really needs some serious psychological help with all her issues. She does.  But yet there's another sense that I felt was more important to listen to.   She was trusting me with all this, and her openness even led me to share stuff with her that nobody else at work knows about me.  She had this sweet look on her face as I told her these things, and she simply said that she had nothing to offer me, she had no experience in that area but that I was more than welcome to call her anytime I needed someone to talk to.  So there was a trust being built between us.  And there's this sense that goes beyond the common sense, sort of a spiritual thing, or at least an intuitive thing, that told me I needed to just be her friend.  How I wanted to tell her about Jesus at that point, but that was something I also needed to feel led to do, at the right time.  The couple times i referred to church in any way, she either made a slightly derogatory comment about it, or she just clammed up, got this vacant far-away look on her face and wouldn't open up to me for awhile.  I'm not your best evangelist here, never have been.  Scared to death of saying the "J"-word in situations like this.  usually.  Not that I haven't been trained... have learned lots of ways of sharing, like using the little pamphlets about the 4 Spiritual Laws, which are great, keeps you focused and to the point in sharing the gospel...but I end up getting the order all mixed up and can never remember where scripture verses are from, need work on that.  Just wanting to share my heart here.  But maybe another time.

One more thing and I'll stop.  She described a situation to me that left an image in my mind that I will never forget.  She said that, unlike in the videos about strip clubs, there aren't these guys that bring out brooms and sweep up all the dollar bills on the floor for the "dancer" who just finished her performance.  No, the reality is, when the music dies,  and the spotlight's off, these girls have to get down on the floor, wearing whatever they had on at the end of their dance, (which is usually nothing) and crawl around on their hands and knees, picking up the bills that were thrown at them in a feverish moment of degrading "applause".  wow. what an awful picture of public humiliation, the shame.  I wonder what goes through their heads, do they ever wonder things like, "what if my mother were to see me now?"  how sad.  And how, in a strange way, I can sort of relate to this, this feeling of humiliation and public shaming.   Just like the adulteress in the Bible, the one who was "caught in the act" by the Pharisees and brought before the people.  (uh, excuse me, but where was the Guy Adulterer in this story? hmmm?)  anyway, I just love how Jesus just treats her with compassion. not judgement.  but says, "go and sin no more."  I am so thankful that I asked Jesus into my heart at the age of 13.  I know I messed up since then in a lot of ways, and could therefore relate in a small way to some of what my friend was saying, but I know that it was his grace and his Holy Spirit that kept me from getting dragged into even worse things.

So now what?  yes, her story truly breaks my heart.  I want to help her, yet I know I must also set my boundaries, both to keep myself from getting dragged down, too, and  to point her to the cross.  Keep our talk open, but gently turn her face toward the Lord.  Let her see His loving eyes, those eyes that do not condemn, but are also flooded with tears for this child, whose heart has been so hardened by the world, so hurt and shamed by her lifestyle.  That's all.   just pray.  pray for my friend.  thank you.

rainbows from the vault

My vision is being tweaked day by day.. From things I hear, things I read, heart-to-heart conversations, and my own heart's cry in my quiet places where I sit alone with God and His word.  I listen.  I think.  I pray.  I feel.  I struggle with some thoughts, wrestle with my feelings, even fight with God sometimes.  And my path is slowly being illuminated, one flicker of light at a time.  I do not agree wholeheartedly with any one person or source that I listen to, I would be lying to say otherwise. (even you, God..boy, have i got some tough questions for you when i get up there!!)   But I am thankful for them all.  And I believe God is using them, along with His Spirit, to put me in a place of quiet learning, to help assemble my own voice, my own choices, till I am ready to take the next step.  Whatever that might be.

When I think of the dreams I have for this lifetime..for dance, music, art, travel, sports & fitness, adventures in a tropical  environment, a foreign land, ministry...all these great things have boundless energy and vision - the sky's the limit.  But in this soft & squishy area of my heart... (sound of fizzling out..)  I know that in this place, there's no place to go.

But...

I've found something wonderful, a love that is better than eros.

Not a selfish kind of love, but a love for my inner child, the real me that God created.   This person inside who really does have a choice and a voice.  No matter how squashed-down I may have felt for so many years, I am now choosing to let that child out, to spill its light all over my world.  to train this child, to still love God and others, but to not be afraid to show my true colors.  It's who God chose me to be.  And if someone doesn't like my colors, too bad.  I won't change my personality, or become smaller, for someone else.  I want a new, true kind of humility.  Like Christ.  He knew who He was.  He loved others and He wasn't afraid to say who He was.  Thank you, Jesus, for such a perfect example of a healthy personality.

pep talk to myself

like i used to say to my kids when they were toddlers...

     ..."use your words!!"

Some good scriptures and quotes about using your words, honestly:

Never let us be guilty of sacrificing any portion of truth on the altar of peace.” ~ J. C. Ryle

Colossians 3:9 MSG Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life.

To find favor with God, we need to deal honestly. When we tell the truth, we honor God and build trust with people. We should fear God and be honest, and we can breathe easy.

Psalm 51:6, NIV Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Prove

Corinthians 13:6, NIV Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

Matthew 5:37, ESV Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Psalm 24:3-5, NLT Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly
I wanna see you be brave  (Sara Bareilles)

Love aims at truth.

"Love does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth" (1 Corinthians 13:6). Love is glad when truth is spoken. Therefore love aims at truth. It supports truth.
"Out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you" (2 Corinthians 2:4). Here is an example of how love aims at truth. Paul is filled with love and it compels him to write a letter that was hard, and caused sorrow in him and in the Corinthians. But it needed to be said. So love said it. Love speaks the truth personally and doctrinally.     (Commentary by John Piper)
"Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ" (Ephesians 4:15).
now how would you like your words... tongue or text???

yes. use your words.  take a deep breath, and use your words.

fighting all week

Sorry, you're gonna hear about it anyway.  I do this partly for myself, to help me remember what I've learned.  I heard recently that if you repeat out loud (or in writing, i think that counts) something that you just learned, you're a lot more likely to remember it.  So this is my class notebook today.  A review of my mental notes.  sweat bytes.  whatever.

My goal: to fight 3 consecutive days this week.
which means, body combat tuesday at one gym, boxing fitness class wednesday at another gym, and another body combat class thursday at yet another gym.
i'm such a gym rat, junkie, roadie.

tuesday. body combat. same teacher, different gym.

Body Combat 58, sneak peek:

New release, body combat 58.  tough choreo. still trying to get it all the moves down.

I love the above photo, looks like the muay thai track, the brawlers and knee-elbow thingys.
It's to the song, It's a Fight.

Robb's warning, "this muay thai track has lots of elbows, knees, brawlers, no time to breathe."
he's right. leaves me red-faced & breathless. perfect.

so many gems in this track, i may come back to it another time. still a blur in my mind with all the new stuff. breakin it down, step by step.

wanting to build up my stamina & endurance this week, so yesterday i dragged my achy body to the boxing gym. been too long since my last visit. but once i got into it, i was ready to kiss my gloves, felt so good to hit a bag again.

place was packed.  typical january resolution people i guess.  i went in with a quiet attitude of i'm here to pace myself, work on my form, not try to out-beast the person next to me.
was a good choice, as my baby-girl knuckles started complaining when i hit too hard.  had to pull back, think about aiming those 2 middle knuckles at the nose, chin, lip, but not with full-out intensity like sometimes.  tightening fist upon impact. guard up, shoulders roll forward, abs tight. focus. funny, our trainer chose It's a Fight song here, too, but she turned it off when she heard a few "choice" words come out, since there were some "youngens" in the room, some kids in the corner playing on their DSi's while their parents "worked".

(enjoy the above clip,  hopefully one of the links works..the trainer is duque, whom i dubbed "the donut man" in a previous post!)

one more video, just for fun: mitt training with trainer James..
this guy comes into my starbucks regularly for our cinnamon coffee cake. (where he puts all that cake i don't know, he's so skinny, he must stuff it in his socks or somethin, that's it..)  at the gym he mostly does private training sessions plus he coaches the boxing "team" that practices several times a week.  check it out..
(this looks so fun!!)

oh speaking of starbucks...(another rabiit trail story, i know) last night there was this guy there with the most perfect, freshest black eye i've ever seen!   (and i don't mean the coffee jargon variety of a "black eye", which is a cup of coffee with 2 shots of espresso added) this dude was scary-looking, too.  shaggy shaggy hair tucked into a slouchy baseball cap.. and the really interesting part, was he was seated with a couple of older, clean-cut gentlemen at a table, on which a leather-bound bible sat between their cups of coffee.  hmm. i recognized one of the clean cut gentlemen from some of the wednesday night church-looking folk that come in here regularly on wednesday nights, guess it's bible study night or something at starbucks.  good place to meet, i might add.  so i'm trying to get a good look at this dude's black eye without him catching me staring, or he might want to fight me, and then of course i'd have to give him another shiner on the other eye. so this whole goofy situation is making my wandering mind wonder, in its usual awe over how truth can be stranger than fiction.. how a scruffy guy with a fresh black eye ended up at starbucks with these rather polished church guys.  and i'm thinking all kinds of churchy jokes, like maybe they literally banged his head with the bible, or i've heard of holy rollers but holy brawlers? or perhaps he was the resurrected Goliath the giant, given a second chance at life, to become a good giant, like the abdominal, er, i mean abominable snowman in the rudolph movie.  ...while all the while balancing these thoughts with the possibility that some real life-changing moments were taking place over a black-eye coffee and the word of God.  go figure.

anyway back to boxing class.  interval work-out.  jump rope warm-up, 5 minutes hitting and kicking the bags in various combinations, then 5 minutes strength training using only one's body weight.  that meant, for example, a repeated sequence of v-sits, push-ups, burpees & squat jumps.
why the constant level changes? drill sergeant Michelle asks us.. answer: it builds stability.  makes sense. in boxing and in life.  you can't constantly be on a high level, emotionally. you need the lows, too, to balance you out.
loved the final ab work-out.. lying down with toes hooked underneath the heavy punching bag hanging down, then pull up to sitting position, grab the bag and "crawl" up it to a standing position, like you're hugging a huge teddy bear or 150-lb. human, back down, repeat.

Day 3- today- body combat again.  a second chance at that new release with its tricky fast moves.
again loving the muay thai track best, the jab-cross-descending elbow strikes, brawlers, and this gallop forward, push your opponent first with your hands, then a big shove kick from the hip, lean back on it, throw your body weight into it..
big class again, Robb warns the new people that they will hate him tomorrow.  gives them an idea of which muscles to expect to be on fire tomorrow.  not what you'd expect, he says..and tells how he taught body pump for 5 years before teaching body combat and was surprised at the muscles it worked.  he also mentions that he trained in martial arts since age 12.  now that tidbit is enough to impress me a bit.  I would definitely rather train under someone like that than to fight them.  i love finding a good teacher.

cool down song...

i love some of these lyrics... (notice i said 'some', my conscience won't let me copy-paste all of them..just sayin..)

"Till I Collapse"
(feat. Nate Dogg)

[Intro:]
'Cause sometimes you just feel tired,
Feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
And just pull that **** out of you and get that motivation to not give up
And not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

[Chorus - NateDogg]
Till the roof comes off, till the lights go out
Till my legs give out, can’t shut my mouth.
Till the smoke clears out - am I high? Perhaps.
I'ma rip this **** till my bone collapse.
Till the roof comes off, till the lights go out
Till my legs give out, can’t shut my mouth.
Till the smoke clears out - am I high? Perhaps.
I'ma rip this **** till my bone collapse.

[Verse #2:]
Music is like magic there’s a certain feeling you get when you're real...

...and that's a good place to stop, thank you eminen & nate dogg..

________________

after body combat, body flow. haven't done that wonderful flowing class of tai chi, yoga & pilates for awhile, so it was great to get stretched out again.  even did the splits in one part, haven't done that since we did the flying splits in high school dance team. that was fun, while enjoying some new tunes, like one entitled lego house.  likin it.

so that's my review of my workouts for the week.  i know, someday maybe i'll have more of a life to report on than what goes on at the gym.  or else the courage to report on what goes on in my head at the gym.  that's where my thoughts flow.

congrats for reaching the bottom of all this. class notes. that's all. ;-)

there i go

"Wherever you go...there you are."

yep, it's true. there YOU are. and i may have more to say on that later.  but for now, i will just bask in the warm thought that in less than a month i will be uploading my very own images of rincon, puerto rico to this blog instead of copy-pasting from google.

Eminem - Till I Collapse (Full Song)

another great song, love eminem, can't wait to do this song (and the other) in the new release at thursday's body combat class!

slowly breaking up

thank you rain.  you cancelled my appointment.  i was not looking forward to spilling my guts yet again.  throwing out my years of pent-up frustration for the vultures to come pecking at again, as that's what this feels like.  so therefore, dear jennerositysonar.blogspot.com, this is it.  we're breaking up.  i've found someone new to hear my deepest cries, my loudest screams, my maddest rants.  it's a secret place, a new blog,  for me to hide and be real.  more real than here. and just as fast and free as my fingers fly on these keys.  oh sure, i might drop by now & then when i feel i have something shallow enough & clever enough to entertain you with, but that's it.  i'm moving on to someone else who can take my junk.  cuz i'm hitting hard now.  the sand in these bags will soon be flying.  and when i get on a roll with these fighting images, it might be nasty, so best i head on over there now before the blood starts spurting.  thanks for the memories. over and out. ping!

waters cannot quench

Heading to the lake today.  another walk, another talk.  trying to get my story straight. again.  hate this.

my heart is wrenched
new tears flow like rain
fresh growth
spilling from the eyes of my heart
Lord i have no more words.

Sometimes just the music speaks louder than the words.

You won't relent until You have it all,
My heart is Yours

I'll set You as a seal upon my heart
as a seal upon my arm
For there is love that is as strong as death
Jealousy, demanding as the grave
And many waters cannot quench this love

You won't relent until You, have it all
My heart is Yours
You won't relent until You, have it all
My heart is Yours

Come be the fire inside of me
Come be the flame upon my heart
Come be the fire inside of me
Until You and I are One

I don't want to talk about You
Like You're not in the room
I want to look right at You
I want to sing right to You

You won't relent until You have it all,
My heart is Yours

I'll set You as a seal upon my heart
as a seal upon my arm
For there is love that is as strong as death
Jealousy demanding as the grave
And many waters cannot quench this love

Come be the fire inside of me
Come be the flame upon my heart
Come be the fire inside of me
Until You and I are One
